What Is Hair Loss

What Is Hair Loss? Did you know that hair grows on every part of the human skin with the exception of the palms of our hands and soles of our feet? You don’t always see the hairs because many are so fine they are virtually invisible. A protein, known as keratin, is produced in the hair follicles in the outer layer of skin.

The average adult head has about 100,000 to 150,000 hair and loses up to 100 of them per day. The life cycle of hair is divided into three phases beginning with the anagen phase which is active hair growth lasting between two and six years. Next is the catagen phase which is hair growth lasting two to three weeks. Finally the telogen phase is a resting phase that lasts about two to three months at the end of this resting phase the hair is shed and a new hair replaces it and the growing cycle begins again. The rate of hair growth slows as people age.

Hair loss is also called alopecia

There are many different types of alopecia.

  • Involutional alopecia is natural condition where the hair gradually thins with age. This is where the hair follicles go into the resting phase and the remaining hairs become fewer in number and shorter.
  • Androgenic alopecia is a genetic condition that affects both men and women. Men with this condition is known as male pattern baldness. Men can begin to experience male pattern baldness as early as their teens or early 20s. Male pattern baldness is characterized by a receding hairline and gradual disappearance of hair spanning from the crown and frontal scalp. Women with this condition, known as female pattern baldness, typically don’t experience significant thinning until their 40s or even later. Typically women experience a general thinning over the entire scalp. This type of baldness is typically triggered by dihydrotestosterone, a more potent form of testosterone also known as DHT.
  • Alopecia aerate typically starts suddenly and leads to patchy hair loss in children and young adults. This condition may cause complete baldness, but about 90% of people will have the hair return within a few years.

There are several factors that may cause hair loss including:

  • Genes
  • Hormones
  • Stress, illness, and childbirth
  • Drugs such as chemotherapy, blood thinners, and beta-adrenergic blockers.
  • Autoimmune disease
  • Medical conditions
  • Diet
